Conversion from PDF Pricing

The columns below are to obtain a general idea of the pricing for conversion from PDF files.  The average from-PDF book converted by us comes in, price-wise, at between $250-$400.00 (USD), which includes two complete eBooks, one in MOBI format and one in ePUB  format delivered to you for your use at Amazon and other retailers.  This average pricing assumes that the PDF is a modern PDF--that it's searchable, which means that it's not the old "image-only" PDF type.  If you have a much older PDF, make sure you ask us about it before assuming the prices shown above. Just like our books, all of our quotes are custom--created from each individual book, as no two books are alike. Most simple fiction or fiction-like prices will fall within the rates stated below. Files that have additional formatting elements, like lists, emails, text-messages, newspaper articles, etc., will incur additional costs as shown in the below table, but these numbers should be suitable guidelines.

Conversion from InDesign Files/Folders:

We can accept the INDD (InDesign) files that you used to create your PDF and provide you with discounts if we are able to use those.  Not all InDesign files will result in discounts.  Just as some Word files require clean-up, so do some INDD files from less-experienced designers.  Professional designers can achieve pricing nearly equivalent to a clean Word file, however, so we urge you to submit INDD files for assessment, if you have them. Good INDD files can result in significant price savings!

What Do I Get?

For most books, we provide you with two completely finished, hand-coded eBooks, one in each of the major eBook formats. One in MOBI format, for Amazon, and one in ePUB format (for Nook, iBooks, KoboBooks, Sony, Smashwords, etc.). Exceptions are Fixed-Format Books, which are in a special category, and for which you may only receive a book for one particular retailer. (See: Fixed Format Books and Pricing).

Do I get to see these files before I upload them?

Not only do you see them, we require that you see them, view them, review them, and approve them.  It's part of our bulletproof "no surprises" guarantee. We don't just hand you a zipped folder of "mystery meat" files, and tell you to go upload them, like some of our competitors. We have you open the files, and see exactly what they'll look like on readers' devices.  If you have a Kindle, Nook, or other reader, we encourage you to upload the files to those devices--so you know precisely what you're getting.  Until you've approved them, we're not done.  

Do you do the uploading (at Amazon/Nook/etc.) for me?

If you really need help in uploading your files, we'll help you. We can do this via a Skype video-call session, a phone call, or other means available through our Publisher's Concierge program. It's best if we don't do the actual uploading for you, because when your book is uploaded, all sorts of personal information is visible, like your address, bank account numbers, social security number, and that sort of thing.  You should want to keep that information private. Also, it's against Amazon's rules for you to let a third-party (like us!) log in as you--it legally voids your contract with them.  So, yes, we'll help you--but unless you are disabled in some way (legally blind, etc.) we really prefer not to do it for you.  Truly, not one person in 100 needs help after they've received a fully-formatted, complete book from us.  You won't, either.  

What happens if you make a mistake in conversion?

A mistake?  Inconceivable!  Okay, in all seriousness, Princess Bride references aside, of course, mistakes can happen.  We're humans, not machines.  If we make a mistake, we'll fix it.  Period.  It's our Bulletproof Guarantee.  You'll be happy when you leave here.

Can I get a quote for a Word file when you're done?

You betcha!  Many of our clients come to us with print-layout PDF's that they had done somewhere else, and they no longer have an up-to-date source (Word) file.  If you need one, tell us, and we'll quote you to provide you with a usable Word file (which we make from the final ePUB), at the completion of the project.

What's Included?

Generally, for the typical book, one MOBI formatted eBook, one ePUB formatted eBook (the first for Amazon, the latter for other retailers); we include embedding the cover, a fully-linked and functional TOC (Table of Contents), chapters starting on new pages/sections, embedded fonts (if desired), an About the Author page and all relevant front/back-matter.  Basic and typical clean-up is included; clean-up needed above and beyond what is typical will be quoted as an additional fee.  

How Long Is Your Quote Good For?

All our quotes are good for 60 days, unless we expressly tell you otherwise.  Each quote is detailed, letting you know exactly what each formatting element costs (for example:  basic formatting is $X.00, indices, $Y.00, etc.) 

Is My Manuscript Safe from Copyright Infringement?

Yes, of course. It's completely safe with us.  If we were stealing people's IP (Intellectual Property), we'd be out of business pretty darn quick.  However, if you're worried, we have a Non-Disclosure Agreement ready to go, that we'll sign if you like.

What's The Average Turnaround Time?

Unless we tell you otherwise, you'll receive your converted book or books in 8 working days from the time we receive your final manuscript (or PDF file, InDesign file, etc.) and cover for conversion. Of course, sometimes, things happen--people get sick, etc.--but mostly, we hit those schedules.  Depending on the file you send, we may either send you both formats at once to proof (both ePUB and MOBI) or the ePUB first, as your "review copy," and then build the MOBI file from the approved ePUB, in a linear fashion.
