About Us
The Company

From Left to Right, The Crew: Hitch, Barb, Aaron, Steve on Sax; Rick on the lower-left and Allen at lower-right on the iPad.
Booknook.biz is all about the books.
Ebooks for every shape and size of reader. First-time authors, published writers, people with rights-reverted books.
We craft ebooks for both .mobi format (Kindle) and .epub format (Nook, iPad, Sony e-reader, Kobo and virtually every smartphone reading software platform). Every client—except when requested otherwise—receives two files, one of each format, to facilitate the writer’s or publisher’s ability to disseminate the book widely and utilize different selling platforms for promotional opportunities.
Kimberly A Hitchens
Owner, Booknook.biz
An avid reader for a lifetime, I got into this business by accident. A random Christmas gift of a Kindle to my husband—which he didn’t use—gave me the opportunity to start downloading public domain books from Project Gutenberg, a worthwhile enterprise if ever there was one. (I donate time at Distributed Proofreaders, and if you treasure the Classics, you should too). Dissatisfied with the formatting of the publicly-available texts, I started reformatting the books with the help of MobiPocket Creator, a program for making .prc files that was acquired by Amazon in the early ebook days.
Then a local Book Shepherd, Penny Callmeyer, got me involved with creating a Kindle-compatible file for one of her clients, Charles Irion, for Irion Publishing.
And, as they say, that’s how the legend started.
All kidding (about the legend) aside: we do great books at reasonable prices. We have good relationships with Amazon and with Apple, amongst others. We won’t hose you, there are no hidden fees, no long waits. We can find you cover designers and if needed, proofreaders. We have a solid list of authors.
So send us your book. Ask us for a quote. You won’t regret it. (All colored paintings copyright 2011, Jenn St-Onge, exclusively commissioned by and licensed to Booknook.biz)
Rickhardt Capidamonte
Rick is one of our main “go-to” guys, particularly for tough books. His attention to detail is second to none, and he’s our Team Leader for fiction titles, in addition to being a talented cover designer (ask him for a sample of his portfolio!). And if you ask him politely, yes, he'll tell you his hairdresser's name.
Don’t let that cute face fool you. Rick’s a terror on tough books. He’s also one of the independent Cover Designers most requested by Booknook customers. If you would like to have Rick prepare some comps for you to look at, please Email Rick for a Cover Design Quote

Barb E., International Woman of Mystery
Team Leader, Booknook.biz
Although it took some mighty persuasion on our parts, we were fortunate enough to land Barb--our Canadian representative--to head up the Toronto team of Booknook.biz. Not only is Barb busy handling her own eBook clients, but she pitches in for us as well, using "Her Girl PERL" to generate top-notch books for many of our fiction clients.
Not to mention, she's developed our POD methodology, to streamline a combo POD->ePUB-->MOBI book-making method that delivers stunning books at a super-competitive rate to our clients.
Barb brings yet another level of international diversity to us, not to mention linguistic skills that the rest of us don't possess (she's fluent in French and Mandarin), and is no doubt one of the finest of our Steely-Eyed EPUB Pilots.
(She's also a horse-breeder of no mean accomplishment, and, truth be told, taught Hitch almost everything she knows about HTML--including how to spell it.)
So send us your book, and ask for Barb's team. You'll love her work. (All colored paintings copyright 2011, Jenn St-Onge, exclusively commissioned by and licensed to Booknook.biz)
Elizabeth H.
Need edits? Elizabeth doesn't work for us directly, but we refer a lot of work to her and she's enormously popular with our clients. Drop us a line, and we'll cheerfully refer you to her.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How long have you been in this business?
- Oh, sure, anyone can claim to be an expert...
- What makes you different from the other companies doing this service?
How long have you been in this business?
We've been doing this, professionally and full-time, for just under two years. We've been listed with Amazon as a Professional Conversion service since summer of 2010.
Oh, sure, anyone can claim to be an expert...
...but how do you know we're "for real?" We've been very lucky, when it comes to clients! You can see almost all of our clients on our "Authors" page (be prepared for a lot of scrolling!), and you can confirm that we've done the books you see listed there by downloading a free sample from Amazon or Nook, and checking the copyright page--our bookcredit will be right there for you to see. We have hundreds of completed books in our catalog--ask us for a copy of this quarter's catalog, if you don't get a chance to scroll through our author page(s).
What makes you different from the other companies doing this service?
We care about quality. Period. We don't use conversion tools or "magic" programs; we run two full-time production Crews and convert and code everything by hand. We spend a lot of time giving each book its own individual character, and we invest energy to ensure client satisfaction. Don't believe it? Check out our Authors page and see how much repeat business we have, which speaks for itself.

Intent to Sell: Marketing the Genre Novel, by Jeffrey Marks
Due to overwhelming request, we've begun migrating our previously "available only to Booknook.biz" Resources section--over 80 links and sites helpful to the Indy Published author--to our Knowledgebase. As part of this effort, we're adding our resources a bit at a time, focusing heavily at first on marketing tools and techniques as well as other areas (like cover designers, how to create/obtain a cover template, how to work with Twitter articles, etc.)
Today's addition--someone well known to many of you--is Jeffrey Marks, award-winning novelist, marketing and publicity Guru, and his most recent Kindle Book, the Fourth Edition…

Booknook Success Story: Client Tom Gates No. 1 in the iBookstore!
One of our favorite clients, Tom Gates, author of Wayward, is celebrating this week; his book has just topped the charts at iBooks, holding down the #1 spot in Travel Books, doing so in a matter of a mere few weeks. Tom talks about his book and experience in this interview in Matador. (n.b.: adult language in the interview). The book is knocking them dead on iBooks as well as Amazon, climbing to Amazon's top-ten in "travel essays," although that description doesn't do it service. Witty, charming, (and a hoot to work with), Tom shows how self-publishing…

Back in the Saddle Again
As I actually had an inquiry yesterday, asking if we were "still in business," (!), I figured I'd better tell everyone that yes, we're back from our Holiday break, even if I have been dilatory about changing out the Christmas-New Year's phone message. We're swamped, surprisingly--so our queue is running a little longer than usual (2 full weeks on fiction titles, longer on complex titles), and we are literally inundated with requests for quotes.
So, yes: we're back in the usual swing of things!

Happy Holidays, 2011!
The Crew at Booknook.biz wants to wish you the most joyful of Holiday Seasons in 2011. Our book-making elves have been busy preparing books to be ready for the virtual shelves (and some print shelves!) in time for the big Christmas Rush.
I'm taking the holidays off to enjoy family and friends, from Christmas Eve through January 3rd. While I'm gone, Project Coordinator Leonard Lopp has the helm, running with reduced staff on reduced hours (and NO phone!), so everyone can have some well-earned time off. If your book is in production, or entering production for January delivery,…

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT BOOK INTAKE: DEC 1, 2011
Please take note:
- We are not accepting any new submissions for deadlines/delivery within the month of December, 2011. Yes, we ARE accepting new intake titles, we simply are not slating delivery dates prior to Dec. 24th at this time; we are out to January 4th.
