Our "Fixed-Format" Pricing

Fixed-format books take many shapes.  They can range from books for Museums, like "Strings Attached," or to Kids' books--what we used to think of as "Kids' Picture Books."  Before you review our pricing, you may wish to check out our articles on what Fixed-Format is, what it does, how it works, and the pros and cons of using that format. For some books, like Kids Picture Books or Comics, there's really no alternative, but many titles that can be made in reflowable format. But if you have a Fixed-Format title, we can assist you!  Below is our pricing, broken out into three different tables, for your convience.

The first table is for Kids' books, the most popular form of Fixed-Format. In some columns, you'll see "N/A," which means that a feature isn't available to self-publishers at this time. For example, audio- or video-embedding, in books, isn't available to self-publishers on Amazon's KDP platform, but is available to self-publishers on iBooks.  Make sure you check with us, before you assume that you can use a certain feature, if you're not sure.  The tables are broken out by Kids' Books, Adult books (like cookbooks, art books, etc.) and Comics. At this time, only Amazon and Comixology have specific formats for comic books, so those are the only two with pricing, but we're holding out hope that other retailers will start creating suitable special formatting requirements for comic-book fans everywhere, soon!

Our "From Word" Pricing

The table below is to obtain a general idea of the pricing for conversion from Word, RTF, Wordperfect, Open Office or other word-processed source files/manuscripts. The average fiction book converted by us comes in, price-wise, at between $185-$225.00, which includes two complete ebooks, one in ePUB format and one in MOBI format.  This average number assumes a clean Word (or other) file that does not need clean-up. Just like our books, all of our quotes are custom--created from each individual book, as no two books are alike. Most simple fiction or fiction-like prices will fall within the rates stated below. Files that have additional formatting elements, like lists, emails, text-messages, newspaper articles, etc., will incur additional costs as shown in the below table.

FAQ

What Do I Get?

For most books, we provide you with two completely finished, hand-coded eBooks, one in each of the major eBook formats. One in MOBI format, for Amazon, and one in ePUB format (for Nook, iBooks, KoboBooks, Sony, Smashwords, etc.).

*Do these prices include file clean-up?

No--these prices assume that you've provided us with a clean Word file.  If you don't know how to see if your file is a clean Word file is, you may not have one. See our article in our Main FAQ about how you can clean up your file in advance to avoid additional clean-up charges.  What you're paying for with us is professional eBook formatting, to ensure that your book looks beautiful and works correctly on all e-reading devices.  We don't simply clean up a Word file and hand it back to you--we build your books in HTML and CSS, to ensure gorgeous, correctly-formatted ebooks that will work across the entire pantheon of e-readers out there.

Do you do the uploading for me?

If you really need help in uploading your files, we'll help you. We can do this via a Skype video-call session, a phone call, or other means available through our Publisher's Concierge program. It's best if we don't do the actual uploading for you, because when your book is uploaded, all sorts of personal information is visible, like your address, bank account numbers, social security number, and that sort of thing.  You should want to keep that information private. Also, it's against Amazon's rules for you to let a third-party (like us!) log in as you--it legally voids your contract with them.  So, yes, we'll help you--but unless you are disabled in some way (legally blind, etc.) we really prefer not to do it for you.  Truly, not one person in 100 needs help after they've received a fully-formatted, complete book from us.  You won't, either.

What happens if you make a mistake in conversion?

A mistake?  Inconceivable!  Okay, in all seriousness, Princess Bride references aside, of course, mistakes can happen.  We're humans, not machines.  If we make a mistake, we'll fix it.  Period.  It's our Bulletproof Guarantee.  You'll be happy when you leave here.

What's the Bulletproof Guarantee?

Very simply, exactly what it sounds like. You'll be happy when you leave here, period.  We work our buns off for you.

Can I get a quote for a print layout PDF?

You betcha!  For fiction and simple non-fiction layout, see our POD Package pricing plans.  If your book is very complex, we'll likely refer you out to a Trusted Provider, as we don't have the resources in-house to take on highly complex print layout projects.  We like to stick to what we're good at.

But I still have a question about...

Generally speaking, we've probably already answered that question.  We strongly recommend that you download our FAQ ATTACK!, which has answers to the six areas of most-commonly asked publishing questions on two fast pages, our Booknook.Biz eBookery 101 Handbook, and take the time to cruise through our AWESOME FAQ.  The FAQ is extremely thorough, and the Resource Links section has links to almost every topic under the sun, from the best blogs, websites and answers we could find.

If you need help about publishing, in general, after checking our FAQ, FAQ ATTACK, the Handbook, etc., we are happy to offer Publisher's Concierge consulting services.  Please contact us and ask about pricing for these additional services.   While we are delighted to assist all our customers in every way we can, we obviously--at our pricing--cannot afford to provide unpaid consulting time on topics outside of our scope of work on the deliverables (the ePUB and MOBI files, PDFs, etc.), to keep our formatting and conversion pricing affordable for everyone.

Conversion from PDF Pricing

The columns below are to obtain a general idea of the pricing for conversion from PDF files.  The average from-PDF book converted by us comes in, price-wise, at between $250-$400.00 (USD), which includes two complete eBooks, one in MOBI format and one in ePUB  format delivered to you for your use at Amazon and other retailers.  This average pricing assumes that the PDF is a modern PDF--that it's searchable, which means that it's not the old "image-only" PDF type.  If you have a much older PDF, make sure you ask us about it before assuming the prices shown above. Just like our books, all of our quotes are custom--created from each individual book, as no two books are alike. Most simple fiction or fiction-like prices will fall within the rates stated below. Files that have additional formatting elements, like lists, emails, text-messages, newspaper articles, etc., will incur additional costs as shown in the below table, but these numbers should be suitable guidelines.

Conversion from InDesign Files/Folders:

We can accept the INDD (InDesign) files that you used to create your PDF and provide you with discounts if we are able to use those.  Not all InDesign files will result in discounts.  Just as some Word files require clean-up, so do some INDD files from less-experienced designers.  Professional designers can achieve pricing nearly equivalent to a clean Word file, however, so we urge you to submit INDD files for assessment, if you have them. Good INDD files can result in significant price savings!

FAQ

For most books, we provide you with two completely finished, hand-coded eBooks, one in each of the major eBook formats. One in MOBI format, for Amazon, and one in ePUB format (for Nook, iBooks, KoboBooks, Sony, Smashwords, etc.). Exceptions are Fixed-Format Books, which are in a special category, and for which you may only receive a book for one particular retailer. (See: Fixed Format Books and Pricing).

Do I get to see these files before I upload them?

Not only do you see them, we require that you see them, view them, review them, and approve them.  It's part of our bulletproof "no surprises" guarantee. We don't just hand you a zipped folder of "mystery meat" files, and tell you to go upload them, like some of our competitors. We have you open the files, and see exactly what they'll look like on readers' devices.  If you have a Kindle, Nook, or other reader, we encourage you to upload the files to those devices--so you know precisely what you're getting.  Until you've approved them, we're not done.

Do you do the uploading (at Amazon/Nook/etc.) for me?

If you really need help in uploading your files, we'll help you. We can do this via a Skype video-call session, a phone call, or other means available through our Publisher's Concierge program. It's best if we don't do the actual uploading for you, because when your book is uploaded, all sorts of personal information is visible, like your address, bank account numbers, social security number, and that sort of thing.  You should want to keep that information private. Can I get a quote for a Word file when you're done?

You betcha!  Many of our clients come to us with print-layout PDF's that they had done somewhere else, and they no longer have an up-to-date source (Word) file.  If you need one, tell us, and we'll quote you to provide you with a usable Word file (which we make from the final ePUB), at the completion of the project.

This page will give you very broad ballpark figures in terms of pricing.  The more-detailed pricing pages are also available, here on the menu, if you want to calculate your costs more accurately. However, never forget: our quotes are no-obligation and completely free.   That means that there's no reason not to go right ahead and send your manuscript in for a quote.  It's free, easy, and a good way to know your exact pricing.

Fiction/Simple Books:

The average Fiction or Fiction-like book (simple paragraphical text, see the Fiction or Simple Conversion article for samples) runs $185-$225.00 USD.  This price includes a conversion to both ePUB and MOBI formats--two books for the price of one.

Non-Fiction/More Complex Books:

Now, obviously, this category can vary widely; we've done $75.00 books and we've done $1500.00 books.  But on average, most of the usual non-fiction we see ranges from $250-$350.00 USD.  If your book has hundreds of images, it's going to be quite a bit more; if the complexity is extremely high, ditto.  But we try pretty hard to make eBook conversion with us as affordable as possible for our clients--because an author whose book is financially successful is going to come back with more books for us to convert!  In other words, it's in our own best interests for you to succeed, after you leave our shop.  You can get an idea of the books that fit in this category by viewing our Non-Fiction and Moderate Complex Showcase Gallery.  Again, this pricing includes both ePUB and MOBI formats.

Complex Books:

Again, this is a wildly varying category, ranging from books that are simpler "how-to" books to extremely complex layouts like some cookbooks, or automotive manuals.  Generally speaking, these books will average out with a starting price of roughly $2/page, and go up from there.  You can get an idea of the sort of book we're talking about in this grouping by checking out either the Complex Layouts Showcase or the Conversion from PDF services section article.  There are representative images in both.  Pricing includes both ePUB and MOBI formats.

Kids' Books, Comics, and Fixed-Format Books

Unfortunately, we can't really give you a range of prices that will be helpful in this grouping, as there isn't an "average" price for these. Please make sure that you read these articles:  Kids Books, Comics and Fixed-Format, About Kids' Books as Ebooks, and view the Kids Book Showcase to see what's entailed.  Remember:  each retailer has its own specifications for "fixed-format," so, unlike regular books, we can't just give you a MOBI for Amazon, and an ePUB for "everyone else."  We'll have to make you one ePUB for every retailer you want to go to:  iBooks, KoboBooks, Barnes & Noble, etc.  It's also really important to note that you need a special publisher's agreement with B&N to publish "NookKids" books with B&N.  Pricing on this only includes the specific formats that you need.

Pricing and Quoting FAQ

What's Included?

Generally, for the typical book, one MOBI formatted eBook, one ePUB formatted eBook (the first for Amazon, the latter for other retailers); we include embedding the cover, a fully-linked and functional TOC (Table of Contents), chapters starting on new pages/sections, embedded fonts (if desired), an About the Author page and all relevant front/back-matter.  Basic and typical clean-up is included; clean-up needed above and beyond what is typical will be quoted as an additional fee.

How Long Is Your Quote Good For?

All our quotes are good for 60 days, unless we expressly tell you otherwise.  Each quote is detailed, letting you know exactly what each formatting element costs (for example:  basic formatting is $X.00, indices, $Y.00, etc.)

Is My Manuscript Safe from Copyright Infringement?

Yes, of course. It's completely safe with us.  If we were stealing people's IP (Intellectual Property), we'd be out of business pretty darn quick.  However, if you're worried, we have a Non-Disclosure Agreement ready to go, that we'll sign if you like.

Sending Materials for A Quote

If you have a single file, under 20MB in size, you can send that to us through the Contact page right here on the website.  If you have more files than that, or larger, please see our article on Sending Materials so that you can see all the ways you can reach us.

What's The Average Turnaround Time?

Unless we tell you otherwise, you'll receive your converted book or books in 8 working days from the time we receive your final manuscript (or PDF file, InDesign file, etc.) and cover for conversion. Of course, sometimes, things happen--people get sick, etc.--but mostly, we hit those schedules.  Depending on the file you send, we may either send you both formats at once to proof (both ePUB and MOBI) or the ePUB first, as your "review copy," and then build the MOBI file from the approved ePUB, in a linear fashion.

Why use Booknook.biz?

Basically, because we're one of the top firms in the business.  We've been around since 2008; on the Amazon Professional Converter's List since 2010; award-nominated and top-five finisher in the Digital Book World's 2015 Digital Book Awards for formatting excellence, and our customer satisfaction rate, as collected independently and publicly displayed, (see our FEEFO Feedback and Customer Reviews) is always at or near 100%.  No brag, just fact. We're a small business that busts our tails to make your books beautiful and perfect.  We have real, live people working here that will address and solve your problems.

What Type of Payments Do You Accept?

Well, we pretty much take anything--credit cards, Paypal, and even checks. We prefer not to take goats or chickens, though.  Thanks!
